Do I have to be an experienced golfer in order to join EWGA?
No. EWGA is open to women of all golf experience levels. We have clinics and events where any level of golfer can participate.
How do I join EWGA?
Go to the home page on the website and select "Join today" at the bottom of the page. This brings up the application that has to be completed. Mail or fax the application with the required dues to the address or phone number provided at the bottom of the application.
How long does my membership last?
Your membership last for 1 year. Renewal is based on your anniversary date. EWGA Associations Headquarters sends reminder emails prior to your renewal date.
EVENTS
If I am a new golfer, can I play on a team at a monthly event?
Yes. When you register for a monthly event, indicate on the form that you want to play in the scramble format.
Do I have to have a handicap in order to play in an event?
No. If you do not have a handicap established, you can use your average score for 18 holes. Can I bring a guest to any of the events? We encourage our members to invite potential members to attend an event. A guest may attend one monthly event, one weekday league event, or one Sunday league event. The only event that is not open to guests is the Chapter Championship in June.
What is the cancellation policy for playing a monthly event?
Generally, we must commit to a given number of players ten days prior to an event. Refunds cannot be guaranteed once we have made a commitment to the course. However, a member has the option of finding a substitute. The specific cancellation policy will be posted for each monthly event since they can vary depending on the policy for each course.
HANDICAPS
What is a handicap?
A handicap is an indication of a player's ability. A specific formula is used to compute handicaps by factoring in a player's score and the difficulty of the course played.
Why would I want a handicap?
A handicap allows players of different ability levels to compete with each other. For example, if a player with a 20 handicap has a score of 100, her net score is 80 (100 - 20 = 80) while a player with at 27 handicap and a score of 107 also has a net score of 80. Using handicaps helps to even the playing field, making the game more fun. Handicaps also travel with you. If you play a course that is more difficult than your home course, your handicap will be higher. On an easier course, your handicap will be lower.
When should I get a handicap?
If you are just learning the game of golf and spend the majority of your time taking lessons or practicing, then it may be too early for you to get a handicap. Once you start playing 9 or 18 hole rounds, you should establish your handicap.
Where can I get more information on Handicaps?
For more information on Handicaps visit the USGA Handicaps website: www.usga.org/playing/handicaps/handicaps.html
How do I establish a handicap?
See 2005 Handicap Options for information on establishing a handicap through EWGA.
Weekly Golf
If I am a new golfer, which weekly golf group would be best for me?
For weekday play, we recommend participating in the Cross Creek league. This course is shorter and gives you the opportunity to work on your game before you play a standard golf course. While all EWGA Atlanta members are eligible to play in any league, new golfers may be asked to pick up their balls to keep up with their group. Also monthly there is a Sunday play set up just for New Golfers.
How do I sign up for a weekly golf?
Go to the home page on the website and select "Weekly Play" then "Sat & Sun 18 Hole" or "Weekday 9 Holes". The schedule, contact information, and instructions are provided. Select the course you want to play in and Sign-Up. A new screen will display where you can sign up. Two days prior to the play date the League Coordinator will post the tee times on the web site. Please come back to see your tee times or notes from the Coordinator.
Note: You do not have to play in the every week. Notify the coordinator and let her know when you want to play. Please follow golf etiquette and let the coordinator know one day in advance if you cannot play. EWGA wants to continue to have a good relationship with the golf courses. Of course there are emergencies, but please contact the coordinator and let her know why you could not play.
What is the cancellation policy for weekday or Sunday golf play?
Once you have signed up for an event, the coordinator notifies the golf course how many tee times are required. Please follow golf etiquette and contact the league coordinator via the web site a minimum of one day in advance if you cannot make it. This will give her time to adjust the tee times and contact the golf course.
For Sunday play, if you need to cancel the day of the event, please call the course. We want to continue to have a good relationship with the golf course and constant no-shows will jeopardize our relationship with the golf course. Remember, they are running a business and can offer those tee times to other golfers.
What happens if you signed up to play golf and it is raining?
As you know it can be raining in Alpharetta but sunny in Stone Mountain. Please make sure you contact the course to check the weather conditions. The league coordinator will do her best to contact the course and check on the weather and let the course know if we are going to play. Do not assume that play is cancelled.
Transportation.
Each member is responsible for transportation to and from event. Carpooling is recommended. EWGA Atlanta is not responsible for parking at EWGA events.

PLAYING GOLF
How long should it take to play a round of golf?
Golf rules state that you should be able to play a round of golf in 4 - 4 1/2 hours. It is important for golfers to keep up with the pace of play. It is your group's responsibility to stay within sight of the group in front of you. Not keeping up with the pace of play can cause a domino effect and impact all of the groups behind you. Having to sit and wait for the group in front of you can cause you to lose your momentum and impact the rest of your game.
