ASK ANNE?

Question Asked:

Hello, I took lessons over a year ago and play with friends monthy. I would like to visit your group and consider joining if you are accepting new members. When and where is your next meeting? Thank you.

Answer:
Hi LaShell – Have you ever come to the right place!  We love new members!!

We’re so glad you’re interested in the EWGA and all it has to offer!  I think you’ll find that the EWGA is a great place from which to learn and grow with the game of golf.  From never having picked up a club in your life to being a scratch golfer, we have something for everyone.

As to our activities, we focus more on regular weekday and weekend play than monthly meetings.  The various opportunities for both are available on our web site and you are welcome to sign up to join us.  Also, check out the monthly events and consider yourself invited to register for one.  We'd like give you the a chance to meet current members and learn more about us.  When you sign up just ignore the member number section and in the comment column indicate “potential new member.”

Through the winter months we continue league play primarily on weekends at Chateau Elan and Stone Mountain.  In early spring we kick off the golfing season with our cleverly named Kick Off Party, which signals the start of our monthly events, educational opportunities, and weekday league play.  Socially, in addition to the Player’s Cup and Kick Off parties, we offer a couple Member Orientation evenings, and at least one social gathering hosted by one of our sponsors as well.  You do not need to be a member to attend one of the Member Orientation meetings.  Simply follow the same guidelines for registering for an event for league play.

Question Asked:
Will scores posted from a previous year be counted to establish a handicap?

Scoring records are maintained continuously from year to year.   The handicap system will take the most recent 20 golf scores and the scores can come from previous year or years.

Question Asked:
How many scores do I have to post to establish a handicap?

Answer:
A USGA Handicap Index can be established with as few as five scores when you first join a club. As you continue posting scores, your handicap will be figured using the lowest 10 of your most recent 20 rounds.

Keep in mind you must post 5 18-hole scores.  If instead you post 9 holes only, 10 are required to establish a handicap index.

Question Asked:
My ball was next to a tree but also lots of trees close by.  I had no swing and wanted to take an unplayable.  How far can I go to get relief when two club lengths from my ball still isn't adequate for a swing?  How do I determine the nearest point of relief?

Answer:

USGA rules (#20-5):

The player may deem his ball unplayable at any place on the course except when the ball is in a water hazard. The player is the sole judge as to whether his ball is unplayable.

If the player deems his ball to be unplayable, he must, under penalty of one stroke:

a. Play a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played (see
Rule 20-5), or
b. Drop a ball behind the point where the ball lay, keeping that point directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind that point the ball may be dropped; or
c. Drop a ball within two club-lengths of the spot where the ball lay, but not nearer the hole.

If the unplayable ball is in a
bunker, the player may proceed under Clause a, b or c. If he elects to proceed under Clause b or c, a ball must be dropped in the bunker.

The ball may be lifted and cleaned when proceeding under this Rule.

PENALTY FOR BREACH OF RULE:
Match play — Loss of hole; Stroke play — Two strokes.
