The Atlanta-Birmingham Challenge is a long standing tradition between our two southern EWGA chapters. Modeled after the Solheim Cup, hosting honors alternate each year between each chapter. The Challenge in its Solheim Cup format as it is still played today first began in 2002. Prior to that year, although not official challenges, the Atlanta and Birmingham chapters met for several joint outings at the Silver Lakes course in Anniston, AL. Much like those first outings, many challenges are accompanied by additional members from each chapter who participate in the festivities and enjoy a golf getaway weekend of their own. As teams are limited in size, this is a great way to be part of the overall fun.
The Cup has changed hands several times with a fairly even split between the two chapters. It is always a hotly contested event with major bragging rights at stake. Birmingham won the first Cup in what captain Patricia Lilly still calls “the highlight of my EWGA golfing career – I almost had a heart attack during our rousing comeback on Sunday!"
