Karen Johnson - EWGA Member since 2008; Chapter Chair for Handicaps
Hi, I’m Karen Johnson, your Handicap Chair. I’ve been with EWGA for 4 years now and I Love it!!! I’m responsible for helping members set up and maintain their Handicap Index. I’m also the one that calculates your Course Handicap for each Event and the one that is frantically scrambling to post scores so we can award our winners!
A bit about me….I lived in Fargo, ND from age 5 to 18 and started playing golf with my Dad at 13, who also
just started playing. Soon I was beating my Dad and playing on the High School Golf Team. I’ll have you know that we had to play some of our golf tournaments in the snow playing with orange balls!!! I was MVP for two years and won the State High School Championship for North Dakota in a sudden death playoff. I also went to Nationals but didn’t fair well there, I guess there are other states out there that have a longer golf season and therefore, golf a little better…imagine that! I didn’t mind the cold temperatures back then, but ask my friends they’ll tell you I’m a wimp now!!! That’s what being in Atlanta for 18 years will do for you!
My biggest accomplishment last year was to break 80! I did it twice, both at Chateau Elan. That’s the first time in my life! Yeah!
Having a handicap is a fun sidebar to your game. You really don’t know if you’re improving unless you establish a handicap and see it rise (and fall) over time. Everyone at all levels can establish a handicap. In the beginning, the highest score you can record is a 10 on each hole. How easy is that? But as you get better the highest score you can record gets lower so you don’t have wild golf score swings that will skew your handicap index. We’ll be doing a handicap session before one of our tournaments so please come, learn and start a handicap!
